Triangles in Networks

In this project, I examine whether and how various triangular relationships of rivalries and alliances affect 1) long-term interstate relationships and 2) short-term conflict propensities. Network analysis is employed to capture the various types of triangles.

This project’s first paper, “Triangles, Major Powers, and Rivalry Duration,” is now published in the Journal of Conflict Resolution (67(6): 1128-1154). An earlier draft of the paper was awarded the John Sprague Award (best paper on political networks by a graduate student) by the Political Networks Section of APSA in 2022. A companion paper, “Triangles, Mixed Alliance-Rivalry Dyads, and Conflict Propensity,” is currently in progress.
